This page is for Deans, Directors, Core Faculty, and Adjunct Faculty who design, administer, and teach intensive courses. If you are looking for information to share with your students, please direct them to the Intensive Hub.
Intensive
Curriculum + Planning
Write a COURSE DESCRIPTION for the intensive week (not just the semester) and include expected outcomes and deliverables. Here is an example.
Provide CONTEXT for how the intensive week enhances and fits into the rest of the course.
Pre-Intensive Phase
Intensive Phase
Post-Intensive Phase
Here is an example .
Include A MATERIALS LIST and a SOFTWARE/HARDWARE LIST (if any) that students will need to complete the course. You can see examples here and here.
Deadline:
Monday, July 25
The syllabus for the course and the intensive week must always be uploaded to Moodle the Monday before classes start. Fall 2024 intensive classes start Monday, August 5.
The INTENSIVE SCHEDULE is created specifically for the intensive portion of the class and outlines relatively detailed schedules for the intensive week. The level of detail should match what you would expect from a conference agenda, including breaks, any shared lectures, and (onsite only) when meals will be provided.
If your course relies heavily on technology or you would like assistance getting your students set up, set aside time for an IT check DURING the first class meeting. Here is an example.
To book an IT check for your first class, email help@the-bac.edu at least one week in advance.
(Onsite only) You must indicate when the BAC will provide meals so students can plan accordingly. Here is an example.
Deadline:
Monday, July 25
The syllabus for the course and the intensive week must always be uploaded to Moodle the Monday before classes start. Fall 2024 intensive classes start Monday, August 5.
The "first touch" for students who have registered for an intensive course will come from the Registrar, Jamie Curcio.
Students will find details, expectations, and how to prepare for the week on the Intensive Hub, which is a central and updated spot for all things intensive-related. Please direct students to the page. Students can also reach the page by logging into the BAC student portal. (The icon for the Intensive Hub is a lightbulb on the far left column of the homepage.) Here is what the toolbar looks like.
A Recurring Event
Faculty and supporting staff work together on the intensives, which is an important but also routine event at the BAC. We will create and post an annotated schedule of the week here. In the meantime, you can also reference this planning schedule:
Remote Logistics
If you are using Zoom to deliver your course, it is important that you have a licensed account. (Without a license, Zoom will kick out meetings of more than two people lasting more than 40 minutes.) To request a license email Diana Valencia Becerra in Academic Affairs at diana.valenciab@the-bac.edu
It is the responsibility of the instructor to provide software and materials lists and communicate this expectation with students in advance of the course. We also include a pre-semester checklist and outline student expectations and preparations for the remote intensive here.
Onsite Logistics
Your BAC ID gives you 24/7 access to campus throughout the intensive. If you don't have an BAC ID yet, submit your headshot here so that we can have your ID ready when you arrive.
Please use your first name and last name when saving your file so that we can identify you.
Academic Affairs is in the process of creating a system that makes use of recurring events so that faculty will not have to repeat information that doesn't change much from year to year. We will post any links and instructions here.
For in-person intensives only
To order materials or supplies for the onsite intensive, email Diana Valencia Becerra in Academic Affairs at diana.valenciab@the-bac.edu no later than 10 days before the intensive. Please account for last minute additions by ordering a few extra to have on hand.
NOTE: Ten days in advance is a hard deadline. Academic Affairs places all the orders at the same time, and we cannot guarantee materials will be ready in time for any orders outside of this window.
For in person intensives only
Faculty attending the onsite intensive can request 7-day MBTA passes for themselves and their students. If you are planning a site visit for your students which requires a commuter rail or ferry pass, please indicate this in your request.
To request passes, email Events Manager Matthew Lundeen at matthew.lundeen@the-bac.edu. You will be asked to confirm final numbers one week in advance.
For in-person intensives only
The BAC is delighted to have an experienced Event Planner, Matthew Lundeen. Faculty are asked to specify meal types (breakfast, lunch, dinner), but not specific food items.
Reminder: All intensive schedules are required to indicate when BAC provided meals will be served so that students can plan accordingly.
Deadlines:
1 month in advance: All catering requests are due
1 week in advance: Confirmation of final numbers only
Note: Meals cannot be added after the deadline and cannot be added during the intensive.
The BAC has reserved a room block with a nearby hotel that is a 5 minute walk to campus. Design Studies faculty who need a hotel room must book (but not pay for) their own rooms.
Sheraton Boston
39 Dalton Street
Boston, MA 02199
Book your room here.
The cutoff date is July 19.
How it works: You will be asked to provide a card for incidentals. The BAC will pay for the room and tax. The BAC's Event Manager, Mathew Lundeen, will have a list of faculty staying in the room block and pay for those rooms. Upon checkout, you are only left with incidentals (if there are any).
Faculty have access to the same resources as BAC students and are encouraged to take advantage of all Boston and the Newbury campus have to offer. See the Welcome Packet for details.
